The answer may surprise you.  A gnarly Roman jailer begged the apostle Paul to answer that same question, and the answer was pure and simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…” (Acts 16:31)

Let’s dig a little deeper to learn what this means.  Here’s Grant with his unique way of communicating the answer that’s always been found in God’s Word, the Bible!
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

I think we can all agree that the world we live in is far from perfect, in fact, it can be downright nasty with hurricanes, famine, earthquakes, lions, and tigers, and bears, and all sorts of unpleasant ways to be caused pain or even die! Let’s say we lived in a world without any of those things. No natural disasters, no killer beasts, no terminal illness, and no shortage of food to eat or space to live in. The world would still be plagued by war, hatred, tears, sadness, violence, drugs, murder, people who take 27 items in the express lane, and all sorts of pain and sorrow to boot!  The truth of the matter is that, even if we lived in a perfect world, imperfect people would ruin it for everyone!

Now, I don’t know about you, but I have never met a perfect person. There simply aren’t any. God is perfect. People on the other hand, not so much. The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We are so far from the perfection of God, in fact, that we couldn’t even be described as good, decent, or even fair. Compared to God we are all down right evil. Now compared to other people who are far worse than ourselves, we might say that we are pretty good. Most people, in fact, seem to be basically good, if you compare them to serial killers and the like. But like I said, we’re not comparing ourselves to the wicked, we’re comparing ourselves to perfection, a standard set by God, Himself. When we do that, it becomes painfully obvious that all human beings are simply imperfect people.

God tells us in His Word that He will make a new Heaven and a new Earth which will be completely and totally perfect in every way. The only way to accomplish that would be to only let perfect people in, to preserve the perfection, doing that, however, would leave only God, which would be rather empty and quite pointless.
We don’t even deserve to live in a perfect world. We are all sinful people and according to the Bible, all we really deserve is to die. In Romans 6:23 it says that the wages of sin is death.

It doesn’t matter how much good you’ve done, it doesn’t cancel out the consequences for the bad you have done. Just like going on vacation doesn’t cancel out all the work that you’ve done the other 51 weeks of the year. You still get paid. When pay day rolls around, so to speak, we will be judged and found to be deserving of death; eternal separation from our Creator in His perfect paradise.

But, God loves us. He doesn’t want us to die, even if we do deserve it! So, He sent Jesus, His only Son, to live and die as a human, a human who did not sin, so that He could take our punishment and die in our stead! He died so we don’t have to. Three days later, He rose from the dead, because He is God, after all.

We now have the liberty to go free! He has taken the rap for us and paid our sentence! All we have to do is believe in Him: place our trust in His sacrifice, that it is enough.
There is nothing we can add to it. It’s already been paid for. What would we have to add to perfection, anyway? We are imperfect! We have nothing on perfection! It would be like trying to pay for a 5-star meal with arcade tickets after someone else has already paid the bill. It makes no sense, whatsoever!

All we have to do is trust in Him. That’s it!
